Tip: How to Skew and Blur in Illustrator

by emily on January 23, 2009

Photoshop allows you to create perspective drop shadows on objects by using the Transform:Skew tool and by applying a Filter:Gaussian Blur. How do you complete a Skew and Blur Effect in Adobe Illustrator?

Create a Skew and Blur Effect in Illustrator

For this example we will use the letter T.

1. If applying this effect to type, first select all type and choose Type:Create Outlines.
2. Copy and Paste the letter and apply Send To Back to the copy. Use your favorite keystroke shortcuts to complete these steps.

3. Place the copy in the back slightly to the right of the original.

4. Change the opacity of the copy to 40-50%.

5. Use the Direct Selection Tool to drag each point of the Copy T into a position as if it were the Original T’s skewed shadow.

6. Select the Skewed T and choose Effect:Blur:Gaussian Blur. Apply the Radius setting to your desired effect.

7. Adjust the opacity of the Skewed T to reach your desired effect.

8. Unslect all objects and review your Original T and it’s Skewed and Blurred Shadow!
